Established in 2019, the Chinese Cultural Center serves as a dedicated space for exhibitions, lectures, meetings, and cultural exchange. Guided by the philosophy of the Six Arts, the center presents year-round exhibitions and educational programs on Chinese history, art, and language for the university community, the wider Southern California public, and the world at large. Its mission is to advance understanding of the cultures, histories, languages, arts, and societies of China and the broader Asia-Pacific region.
Dr. Li-rong Lilly Cheng is Professor Emerita at SDSU. Drawing on more than three decades of work in Chinese studies, she brought together her extensive collections, academic network, and long-standing partnerships to establish the Chinese Cultural Center in 2019. A recipient of ASHA Honors, the highest distinction of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and the 2024 Women Who Change the World Award, Dr. Cheng has uniquely combined her expertise as a speech-language pathologist with a lifelong commitment to promoting Chinese culture. Through hundreds of exhibitions and public programs, she has fostered greater understanding between Eastern and Western cultures through both scholarship and the arts.
During the visit, Dr. Li-rong Lilly Cheng and her team introduced the Chinese Cultural Center’s history, mission, and vision, while Mr. Mitch Dudek shared the story behind the Six Arts Museum and Six Arts Cultural Park, along with the museum’s philosophy of collecting and preserving Chinese folk art.
For more than three decades, Dr. Cheng has been dedicated to the study and promotion of Chinese culture, earning wide recognition across North America. Today, through the Chinese Cultural Center at SDSU, she continues to share the richness of Chinese heritage and its relevance in the modern world. Meanwhile, Mr. Dudek has devoted many years to collecting, preserving, and exhibiting traditional Chinese folk art, culminating in the creation of the Six Arts Museum in Lili Ancient Town, Suzhou. Though their journeys are different, they share the same commitment: safeguarding, preserving, and promoting China’s rich cultural heritage for future generations.
Following the visit, Dr. Cheng warmly accepted an invitation to return to Six Arts Museum at the end of August, when both sides will continue discussions on potential areas of collaboration. We look forward to welcoming her back and hope this exchange will mark the beginning of an even closer partnership, creating new opportunities to preserve, share, and celebrate the enduring beauty of Chinese culture.
