(The San Diego Museum of Art, SDMA)。
On July 5, 2026, Mr. Mitch Dudek, founder of Six Arts Museum, and Ms. Lisa Liu, co-founder, visited two of San Diego’s leading museums: the Mingei International Museum and The San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA).
The visit was graciously arranged by Polly, Jojo, and Ling, three presidents of the San Diego Chinese Art Association. Their first stop was the Mingei International Museum, where curator Emily generously came in during her vacation to personally lead the tour. Founded in 1978 by ceramic artist Martha Longenecker, the museum is inspired by the mingei philosophy of Japanese aesthetician Sōetsu Yanagi, celebrating the beauty of everyday craftsmanship across cultures and generations. Many of its works were created by anonymous artisans, each reflecting the warmth, skill, and humanity of handmade art.
Their second stop was The San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA), where chief curator Anita provided a personal tour. Founded in 1926 and celebrating its centennial in 2026, SDMA is San Diego’s oldest, largest, and most-visited art museum. Located in the heart of Balboa Park, its collection includes more than 35,000 works of art, with particular strengths in Spanish and Italian Old Masters, South Asian painting, and nineteenth- and twentieth-century American painting and sculpture. The museum also presents internationally acclaimed special exhibitions and a wide range of public education programs throughout the year.
Together, these visits offered two distinct yet complementary perspectives on art—one rooted in the quiet beauty of everyday craftsmanship, the other in the enduring grandeur of classical traditions. Both reaffirm a shared belief: that art begins with people and is meant to be experienced and appreciated by all.
Looking ahead, Six Arts Museum will continue learning from leading museums around the world while remaining deeply rooted in China’s rich folk traditions. By preserving traditional craftsmanship, encouraging dialogue across cultures, and breathing new life into historic folk art, the museum hopes to build lasting connections between East and West—making the beauty of traditional culture more accessible, engaging, and meaningful for audiences today.
