Wood carving is a branch of carving. As one of China’s traditional folk handicraft, it can be generally divided into three-dimensional carving, root carving, and relief. China has a time-honored history of wood carving. It originated in Neolithic Period which is 7,000 years ago, and the beginning of the wood carving accompanied by people’s daily life. It didn’t become a kind of art until people begin to have artistic ability. During the Tang and Song Dynasties, some artisans began to focus on wood-carving on architectural elements. Qing Dynasty, wood carving reached a new peaking, many were widely used in building component decorations and wooden furniture.

There are more than 80 finest wood carvings are exhibited in here at Six Arts Museum, they were originally from Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Zhejiang and other places, and most of them are architectural elements came from old buildings, which were not only served for the purpose of architectural support, but also was an art of decoration.

Corbels, ceilings, screens, doors and windows are building components made by the most famous craftsmen with the skills of using embossing, openwork and other carving techniques. A variety of auspicious patterns depicting birds, animals, flowers and fruits, drama characters and gods etc…
